Amy Glazer began her career in theater, directing numerous award-winning plays in the San Francisco Bay Area including TheatreWorks, Marin Theatre Company, San Jose Rep., Eureka Theatre, Traveling Jewish Theatre and serving as an Associate Artist at Magic Theatre and Associate Artistic Director of SF Playhouse, where she directed numerous plays. Mid-career, she made her screen directing debut with Barry Gifford's Ball Lightning (2003), Drifting Elegant by Stephen Belber (2006) and went on to make Seducing Charlie Barker (2010) by Teresa Rebeck, which had its world premiere at SFIFF. Prof Glazer has used her theatre directing, focused primarily on new works and premieres, as fodder, adapting to film Drifting Elegant, The Scene, and The Surrogate, merging her two directing "languages". She went on to co-write with Sylvia Brownrigg and direct Kepler's Dream (2016) and The Surrogate (aka Beautiful Dreamer) 2020, also an official selection scheduled to premiere at the 2020 SFIFF. Amy is currently in post-production on Meli, a feature film recently shot on location in Oahu, Hawaii. Amy Glazer lives in the Oakland Hills and is a Film and Theatre Professor at San Jose State University.

 

Expanding her portfolio, she began adapting plays into films. Beautiful Dreamer, her fourth such adaptation, is an homage to the Bay Area, her home for the past 30 years. Her most recently completed film, Kepler's Dream, received the Silver Award for Family Favorite: at the Mill Valley International Film Festival. Adapted from a Y/A novel, the story is about a young girl forced to live with her estranged grandmother, which stars Holland Taylor and Kelly Lynch and which Hollywood Reporter called a "diverting family film charmer." Kepler's Dream can be found on Amazon Prime, Showtime, Google Play, and YouTube.

 

Of her 2010 film, Seducing Charlie Barker, (Theresa Rebeck), which premiered at the San Francisco International Film Festival, the San Francisco Chronicle wrote, "Everything about this movie feels right," and went on to win numerous awards. These include the Grand Prize Award at the Canada International Film Festival, Best American Indie Award at the Ft. Lauderdale International Film Festival, and Best Filmmaker Award at the Jersey Shore Film Festival. Other films include Drifting Elegant (Steven Belber) and a short, Ball Lightning (Barry Gifford) which premiered at the Locarno Film Festival.

 

Prior theater directing credits include Theresa Rebeck's The Understudy at San Jose Rep and Seminar at SF Playhouse, for which she won the Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle Award for Best Director. Amy Glazer's theatre directing resume includes dozens of critically acclaimed productions for Marin Theatre Company, San Francisco Playhouse, Eureka Theatre, TheatreWorks, SJ Stage Company and the Assembly Theatre at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland.
